Support Pediatric Head and
Neck Cancer Research:
Make a Difference Today
The Pediatric Head and Neck Cancer Foundation is the first U.S.-based organization dedicated to advancing research on head and neck cancers in children and improving the lives of those affected by these complex tumors. As a registered 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit, we gratefully welcome your support and financial contributions, which are tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law.
Your donation will go to:
- Advanced research that is specific to children with head and neck cancers.
- Improve diagnostic tools so children can be diagnosed with these cancers earlier when there is a better chance for effective treatment.
- Support clinicians with education and clinical care guidelines to improve the availability and quality of treatment for children with head/neck cancers.
The prevalence and growing incidence of these pediatric tumors, despite radical advancements in cancer treatment as a whole, are troubling and represent a crisis point. Your support matters and can make a real difference. The Pediatric Head and Neck Cancer Foundation would be honored to recognize all donors on this website, regardless of contribution level.

Advancing Pediatric Head and Neck Cancer Research: A Call to Action
Research into myriad areas of childhood head/neck tumors is our priority and passion at the Pediatric Head and Neck Cancer Foundation. Our co-founders include Dr. Joseph Lopez, the world’s most prolific published scientist in the field of pediatric head and neck oncology. Dr. Lopez has published 13 peer-reviewed scientific articles and book chapters running the full scope of pediatric head and neck oncology. His research findings have also led to real advancements in techniques to treat these challenging and devastating tumors. We appreciate the power of research and have seen the devastating effects of scientific stagnation on this front. In fact, this shortfall in research support and medical guidelines governing the treatment of children with these cancers served as the genesis for developing this pioneering organization, the first of its kind in the U.S.
Consider the following:
- One out of every 285 children will be diagnosed with cancer.
- Cancer is the second-most common cause of death for kids aged five to 14.
- Head and neck cancers account for one out of five cancer diagnoses in children.
- The rate of head/neck cancer in pediatric patients has risen steadily over the past 20 years.
- There are only one or two head and neck cancer programs dedicated to children in the whole of the United States.
- One in two children who undergo surgery for thyroid cancer will have complications, while just 3% of their adult counterparts will experience complications.
These statistics are a powerful illustration of the current and dire pediatric head and neck cancer crisis. But, together, we can correct these statistics. There are real faces, real children, and real families behind all of this data. They deserve more. They deserve better. We want to connect, empower, and uplift national and global scientists to address the scarcity of research in pediatric head and neck oncology. Built on a foundation of science and research, we can aim to improve the management and treatment of children with these conditions by developing diagnostic tools and clinical care guidelines that account for their unique pathophysiology, anatomy, and other distinctive characteristics.
We see a future where clinicians are able to diagnose children at earlier stages of their disease, where all children can be treated by surgeons who are specially trained in pediatric oncology, and where children can have the same opportunities for successful outcomes, with minimal risk as their adult counterparts with head/neck malignancies. With proper treatment, built on a backbone of research funding and innovation, we can help children avoid the devastating and life-changing effects of these treatments, too, as the surgeries themselves can present considerable challenges to the pediatric patient’s self-esteem, swallowing, eating, and vision – basically, fundamental aspects of their lives that we as healthy adults may take for granted.
